Chapter 7

Long Night

It almost dawn when they were arrived at the mansion, Lord McFadden rushed in,

“Emma! Shane!!!” as he took the boy to one big room upstairs

“Sir?” Paul felt not sure Master brought the sick boy to Miss Adeline’s room. But Lord McFadden didn’t listen, and put the boy on the big beautiful bed.

“Milord! Sir?” Emma came to the room and found someone unknown boy on her beloved missy’s bed.

A young lad came behind her as the called. And he was as numb as she was. He didn’t expect Master would use this room again, especially for a stranger.

“Not a words yet, Emma, just sponge him,” before Emma could protest. “Shane, fetch water.”

“Yes, Sir,” the young boy did what he told and gave it to Emma while she sponged the little poor kid. But she had to bit her lips as seeing the boy.

    “Sir, he’s so…”

“Yes, I know, Emma, that’s why I couldn’t lose it twice!” Lord McFadden examined the boy, he was quiet again, exhausted by the fever.

“Pneumonia for sure and acute. His lungs are congested, by the sound of them he's been like this before! Keep sponge, and make him to drink.”

Emma nodded. And without ask, Shane had fetch a glass of water.

Lord McFadden started to make some medicine and something for the chest. “What the hell he’s doing out there?”

“Running out for sure,” Sir,” Paul gave a thought.

“Where did you find him, Sir?” Emma with curiously.

    “On the street,” Paul answered.

“But he doesn’t seem like a bid kid.”

Yes he could see that too. And he took his medicine, guess he knew about his illness.

“Right, hold him, we have to get this on his chest and the bandage round. it would sting him,” Lord McFadden said as he ready with the bandage.

Emma kept the boy from struggle as Master bandage around the boy. But the boy didn’t even have strength to fight, just a whimpered pain.

“Shss… don’t struggle, just try relax and rest.”

    “H..hurts… can’t breath!”

    “I know, lad, it’s alright…”

“Sis..ter… Anne, … I’m sorry…,” the boy cried, he looked so painful. “M…Ma…ark…!”

“Shss…. it’s alright, boy,” Emma tended the boy carefully, like she ever did before.

Shane stood not far from Emma and watched that painfully face. It was like her. Why he had to see this twice?

“Edele?” a crack weak woman voice jumped them.

“Evelyn?” Lord McFadden rushed to his wife. He didn’t expect she would come, or even get up from her bed at her state now.

“My baby…” with her eyes not left the figure on the bed.

Lord McFadden guided her to the bed.

Lady Evelyn approached the bed and saw the little figure whimpering painfully.

    “My Edele.”

“Milady…” Emma wanted to protest but Lord McFadden shook his head. She moved away as Master sat her on the bed.

“Edele?” she touched the boy and found him burning up and kept whimpering, “She’s hurt…, Louis, do something!”

“We are, Evelyn, now she just need resting.”

Both Paul and Emma looked each other with the word ‘she’ to the little boy.

“Oh, my poor baby,” she rest herself right beside the boy and hug him, comfort him.

“Sir…?” Paul became so worried with The Lady action, well, all of them. Milady thought the boy was her lost daughter. Miss Adeline. Her daughter who had passed away one year ago.

But Lord McFadden nodded and let her to do that.

“Shs… it’s alright, baby, I’m here, you’re gonna be okay…,” she soothed him and comforted him.

He kept struggle as he fought to breathe and she kept comforting. She kissed the forehead and prayed. She wouldn’t lose her again.

They watched it with heart breaking, yet glad. Lady Evelyn had been in bed for months not having strength to get up since she lost her beloved daughter. She was mentally and physically weak from the cardiac problem and almost giving her life brought her daughter out to the world. But she made it and gave everything for the baby. She loved Adeline very much, so when she lost her, she couldn’t take it and it took her emotion and physically hard. It paralyzed her. So it was like a miracle to see Milady came out from the bed and walk. They even no idea how the lady knew there was a sick boy here. No one knew.

Emma couldn’t hold her tears; she had thought she couldn’t see her lady could walk like this again.

Lord McFadden gave a sign to Emma to help Milady.

She fetched the water and helped her lady to make the boy drink. Milady kept soothing him.

Louis watched her wife, there was some effort to come here, and there was some magnetic which made her come. He saw there was a love in her eyes to the boy, he saw the new spirit on her life. Yes, she couldn’t lose her again, she couldn’t lose her daughter twice, and he wouldn’t let it. He looked to the boy, the boy was very ill, and he didn’t know could he make it, but he promised he wouldn’t let the boy gave up, he had to live and gave a new life for Evelyn.

“Paul, go to St. Peter, ask them, are they lost their one child? And if they are, tell he’s safe here, and they may come. I’m sure they must be so worried if they lost this little lad.”

“Aye, Sir,” Paul nodded and went out.

    “Father?”  Another voice jumped them.

“Byron?” Lord McFadden looked to his thirteen years eldest son.

Byron gave a curious look to everybody on his sister room, but he shock with her mother was there too. She laid on the bed with someone, and gave a comfort.

“Mother?”  he approached the bed and looked there’s a sick figure hugged by her mother. “Mother?”

“Sh… please, son,” Lady Evelyn hushed him.  “Your sister is trying to sleep, she’s sick.”

That even shocked him. He looked to the figure, and he could read it was a boy, even he looked like …. That numbed him.

He turned to Shane and his father  “Father…?”

“Byron, let her doing it, he gave the strength to her…” with the little voice.

Byron bit his lips, “Who is he, father, and why he looks so like Adeline?”

“We don’t know yet who is he, but we believed he’s from St. Peter Orphan House. We found him on the street, soaked by the rain, and he’s very sick. He got an acute pneumonia.”

Byron bit his lips. He turned to her mother who attended the boy care and full of love, “And she thought he is Edele?”

Lord McFadden had to nod.

Byron bit his lips didn’t know what to say. He knew his mother was so heartbreaking for losing Adeline, but this … made a boy as her lost daughter, his sister?

“Please, Byron, don’t break her heart again,” Lord McFadden begged as he knew his son feeling.

Byron still didn’t know what to say. He turned to Shane which like couldn’t say anything too. But then he nodded, for his mother.

Lord McFadden smiled gladly.

    “Is he going to die?”

“'It's going to be a long hard fight, his lungs had already weakened, let’s hope he can again.”

Byron just stayed silent. He still didn’t know how to take this. But to see his mother walk again was a big thing for him!
