Chapter 10

Second Chance

Kian slowly became aware of his surroundings. He was laid in a bed, a nice bed. Sunlight shone through the window, warming the room. He didn't know where he was, how he'd got there, he could only remember pain and fear. And dark dreams, where nobody came to his pleas, nobody cared. But they were gone now. He realized he wasn't alone; somebody was laid by his side watching him, a smile on her face with tears of glad. Kian had to clear his eyes. She was a beautiful woman.

“Baby, I knew you wouldn’t leave me…,” she smiled with tears and kissed him.

Kian was confused, his last definite memory was being in the street, soaked and freezing. On the street. ‘Where am I? And who’s this Lady?’

He looked over and found he was on the most beautiful room he ever seen (well, how many chamber he had seen, except his room on St. Peter) And there’s another women who smiled glad at him, and gave him a sign to calm down as she knew what would happen if he woke up.

He tried to sit up, but nothing happened! He could barely move. And the Lady beside him held him to stay laid.

“Shs…, mother’s here, go back to sleep,” she traced his face gently and comfort him.

“Mother?” and he had to smile.  No need words, Kian felt so comfort and felt home, yet he didn’t know who she was. He didn’t have strength to get up and just let his self lay. Hope it wasn’t a dream. Soon he fell to sleep again.

“She looks so fragile, Emma,” Evelyn traced that pretty face.

    “Yes, Milady.”

“It’s my fault, Emma, I made her like this. I gave this weakness….it’s all my fault,” tears dropped onto the beautiful pale face.

“No…no, Milady…. Miss Adeline is alright, she would be fine, Milady.”

Evelyn just smiled, and traced the little face. She kissed him again, and let herself sleep in his side.

Emma took a deep breath seeing her Lady. She could understand how that thought went into her Master’s mind. It was for her Lady, and she would do anything for her.

It wasn’t long when Emma noticed Her Lady went weak. Her breath was so short and turned pale.

    “Master!”

Lord McFadden rushed in, and found his beloved wife looked so weak. He examined her. Yes, she’s dropping down. He knew this would happen, she had forced her strength too much, yet she’s not that strong.

“Alright, love, your turn to get rest,” as he picked her up.

“No… please… Adele needs me,” she struggled weakly.

“No, honey, she’s alright now. You need the rest now,” and brought her back to her room as she couldn’t fight again only whimpering.

Louis laid Evelyn gently, and she’s still whimpered.

“Let me stay with her, Louis…. she needs me….”

“No, honey, you need your own bed, and you need to get full rest.”

    “I’m fine, Louis_”

But Louis shook his head gently with a smile that she couldn’t resist. She knew about her condition too.

“Don’t leave her alone, Louis, she doesn’t like to be alone.”

“No she won’t, love, Shane stays with her.”

    “Shane…. he’s a good lad.”

“Yes, he is. Now, stop talking, love, go rest,” as he covered his beloved wife to her chest.

Evelyn breaths heavily as she tried to sleep.

Louis took a deep breath and kissed her deeply.

Kian came around and aware his surroundings. Again, he was on a bed, a beautiful bed he ever known. He dreamt a beautiful lady was hugged him warm and kissed him. The lady he had thought was his mother. Yes, it was only dream.

‘Where am I?’ He looked over and found a brown hair. ‘Mark?’ he had to smile widely. This must be Ireland, Dublin, and he had found Mark!

He tried to get up, but weak trapped him.

    “M…Ma..ark..?”

The lad turned over by his voice. And Kian had to shock… No he was not Mark. But he was smiling at him.

“Ah… you had wake up, litt. lad?”

Kian was confused. He pressed his body in fright as the stranger approached him.

    “It’s alright,” he comforted him.

    “Wh…re am..I…?”

“You are at Lord McFadden’s mansion.”

Kian even confused. “Why am I here?”

The young lad smiled gently, “I supposed you don’t remember… Master found you laid semi conscious on the street, soaked and freeze. You got pneumonia.”

Kian bit his lips. ‘Pneumonia’?

The pain and dark dreams remind him. The rain, the cold weather, and the pain on the chest stooped him from breathing. His chest was sore, he ached and there was no strength in any part of him. He was supposed on journey to Dublin.

    “Is it Dublin?”

“Dublin?” he smiled. “No lad, you are not even getting out from London.”

He froze, and felt disappointed. ‘Well maybe he shouldn’t leave. He would never see Mark again. Lord Heaven didn’t allow him.’

He then remembered St. Peter. They must be so worry about him. This realized him what a bad kid he was.

“Father Simon…I’m sorry…” he felt his tears.

But the young lad held his hand, “Don’t worry, kid, they know.”

Kian a bit surprised. “They know? They know I’m here?”

“Of course, lad, and they were here along your fever.”

    “With Sister Anne?”

“Yes. They all here for you, fight with you. I reckon you'll be fine, you're a fighter and no mistake you are such a tiger, boy.”

Kian blushed. ‘Tiger’. Where he had that power for survive again. He didn’t know what for he survived now. He wouldn’t meet Mark again, so what supposed he lived?

“By the way, I’m Shane,” the stranger finally introduced himself. “I’ll attend your needs. Master is still with milady. He’ll be here. All you need is time to get your strength back. We nearly lost you, you know. So rest easy, you'll need all your strength to fight back to healthy and Milady have put a lot of time into getting you this far, so don't waste it!”

    “Milady?”

“Yes, Milady Evelyn, she hugged you, bathed you, fed you or tried to calm you when the fever made you see things that weren't there. Now rest!” he was stern but still in comfort ways.

Kian remembered the lady by his bed, it hadn't been a dream, but a real lady watching over him. A lady who called herself ‘mother’ to him.

When he next awoke, the room seemed full of people. And there all were strangers. He didn’t know all of them, except Shane who had met him before. There were two men, and another young lad with blond hair.

“Hello lad, I'm Dr. McFadden. We found you on the street sick, so I brought you to my house and attend your pneumonia, but you weren't aware of it. Guess you had it before, lad?”

Kian nodded, “Yes, when I’m eight.’

“Yes, we know that. And this is my son Byron, and Paul!”

Kian looked to them, then back to the doctor, “Thank you, Sir, for saving my life!”

Lord McFadden smiled, “That was mainly down to your nurses and yourself!” He examined Kian thoroughly. “It’s going to take time, lad. Plenty of rest and good food to start with, then fresh air and gentle exercise. You're to stay in bed for the next few weeks, we can't risk a relapse and besides, you haven't the strength of a new born babe. But with care and in time, you'll be fine, we make sure you’ll be!'

    “Thank you, Sir.”

Lord McFadden smiled, “Well, actually, we thank to you.”

Kian numb. “Thank you, Sir?”

“Yes. You made my wife live again. Probably this still hard for you to understand, but you are here for something. Thank you, son.”

Damn Kian didn’t know what he said.

    “Sir…, Milady …” a woman interrupted.

Lord McFadden took a sigh with a smile. “We are glad to have you here, boy,” with ruffled his hair gently. “I’ll be right back.” With a smile he left him in rushed, left him with those strangers.

As he left, Kian looked to the strangers with confused eyes.

The man named Paul held his hand, “It’s alright, son, you’re gonna be fine, nothing to worry. Just rest.”

With that he leaved with the blond lad, left him back with Shane. But he didn’t make a word, or telling him what’s going on here, he just tended him nice. Why they were all so nice to him yet there was a mysterious on it? Kian felt scared and alone. He wanted to meet Father Simon or Sister Anne, back to St. Peter. He promised wouldn’t run again.
